Grim Dawn – It’s All About The Story

It’s a crazy one, so let me be the Virgil to your Dante and take you through the crazy world of Cairn. The human race has been driven nearly to extinction. Cairn was the ground zero of the war between the Aetherials, who, similarly to the machines in the Matrix movie, use human bodies as resources, and Chthonians simply want to kill us all. It’s an amazing situation to be in!
So, we had to do what we always do: communicate with higher powers. Actually, I mean literally Higher Powers. As is always the case, when Gods whispered to us, we imprisoned them and studied. It turned out that those beings were some kind of natural, spiritual energies, made of aether that can fuse with our minds. Yeah,  I know, right? Just totally normal stuff.

Aetherials vs Chtlonians

When possessing our bodies, Aetherials can control us and subvert our will. Thus, in the normal course of action, we’ve decided to get them out of our systems. In doing so, we got some heightened abilities after they left human bodies. Therefore, we’ve got that going on for us. 
We brought more of them in an effort to study them more and, in typical human fashion, lost them, so they opened portals to their world and brought their buddies.
The ones are just the Aetherials and they crave for our bodies. The other ones – Chthonians – try to destroy our race before we did all that. It sounds weird, but it’s between time and space; no one really understands it. 
Somehow, you got in the middle of all this, so try to make the world the best there is. Level up, grind, and become the savior or the dull world!

Gameplay and Mechanics

So, if we know what we’re fighting for, let’s check out how we’re going to fight. It’s a classic ARPG game that, similarly to the Witcher games, focuses on combining great storytelling, role-playing elements, and your own skills and dexterity.
There are many crazy mechanisms in this game, so, without further ado, let’s check out what made this game stand out in 2016.

Six Distinct Classes

Did you ever have any desire to be more than just one class in your life? You know, lawyer-doctor combo, or some journalist-IT? Well, in reality, you probably will not have enough time to do so, but – in Grim Dawn – you can do it!
Combine any of six distinct classes with 25 skills and modifiers per class! You can be a Soldier, Demolitionist, Occultist, Nightblade, Arcanist or Shaman: the choice is yours. Well, actually two choices, to be exact.
You can also customize your abilities to acquire bonuses and very strong effects for your class skills. It’s called ‘Devotion,’ and you should probably keep an eye on it!

Friendly and Enemy Factions

Get friends with humans to get some more questlines! Also, check out the market in every NPC run place, so you can get some crazy-powerful faction-based items and augments. 
Make sure you choose your allies wisely because ‘the enemy of my enemy is my friend,’ so if you get to be an enemy of some, you can befriend the others. Unlock additional questlines by choosing people you want to associate with.

Looting Time!

As in every good ARPG, there are thousands of incredible items to loot. Common, magical, rare, epic, legendary: you name it! Augment your class build with over 250 unique skills from items and equipment add-ons.
Also, there are over 20,000 magical affix combinations with over 200 rare affixes. Look out for some new additions to your skillset, and be sure to pick the right one for your playstyle!
You can also craft some recipes based on what you could find! Those higher-tiered recipes can really make an impact. But remember – with great recipes comes great stomach aches. Therefore, proceed with caution! Combine salvaged components and head to action. There are over 250 crafting recipes, so you’ll find something you’d like!

Living and Breathing World With… Consequences

Well, it ain’t gonna be easy, so make sure the choices you’ve made were the right ones! Whether you meet a stranger on the street, talk with a boss in a high position or kill the wrong person,  there will be consequences to your actions.
With over 35 quests and 75+ lore notes to collect, you will probably make a wrong choice more than once. That’s the game! But remember – all the mysterious locked doors can be opened with a rare crafted key!
